Whole family training

Community is what builds stronger teams. The only thing better than doing martial arts is being able to share it with the ones you love.

  • One of our guiding principles is that money or physical ability should not be prohibiting factors for anyone who wants to learn and practice martial arts. We strive to keep ego out of the culture while facilitating a fun competitive atmosphere with the best value possible. Our goal is to keep membership costs as low as possible to allow more from our community the ability to train. This leads to stronger team bonds and more variety in terms of style, body type, and experience levels. All are welcomed which helps add to a complete understanding of combat as a whole. Safety and respect for each other are paramount and among the only requirements.

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport based on grappling techniques and submission holds. • Muay Thai ( Thai Boxing ) is referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs”; and using eight points of contact the body mimics weapons of war. The body is operated as one unit. The knees and elbows constantly searching and testing for an opening while grappling and trying to spin an enemy to the ground.

The sport has progressed significantly over the past 100 years. As it became more popular internationally, the rules began to change so it could be better organized and governed like established sports such as boxing.

Whether you are pursuing a career in fighting or looking to learn how to properly protect yourself from attackers; our Muay Thai program is one you do not want to miss out on!

  • The object of the sport of wrestling is to take your opponent from standing to the ground, preferably to their back; eventually working to pin the opponents’ shoulders on the mat. There are three main types of wrestling, each having different rule-sets and scoring criteria. The three types are Freestyle, Greco-Roman (Olympic) and Folkstyle (Collegiate) wrestling.

Greco-Roman and Freestyle are the two styles that take place in the Olympics. They have similar scoring and rules; one of the main differences is Greco-Roman does not allow scoring below the waist (no leg attacks or trips).

Folkstyle competition is what takes place in schools all the way up through college. There is usually more grappling on the ground in folkstyle wrestling, although some of the top wrestlers have been successful in both collegiate and olympic style wrestling.

The sport of wrestling teaches a great sense of discipline as well as many other mental and physical strengths.

  • Our kids classes focus on teaching students proper techniques through the use of functional movements and partner training. These classes consist mainly of jiu jitsu techniques with the addition of wrestling to give students a complete understanding of grappling as a whole.

“Definitely the best MMA gym in Albany. I have been trying to join an MMA gym in Albany area for a while so I've been to almost all gyms in the area. Clever Combat is unique because it offers high level BJJ, striking, wrestling classes, and even yoga classes- a comprehensive MMA training. Most other gyms specialize in one martial art and have sub-par training in others (E.g. a gym specializing in BJJ, with low level striking classes and no wrestling). Thus, If you are trying to become a well rounded martial artists this is the spot. Plus the instructors and gym members are super kind and awesome! The gym is also very well equipped (large mat, multiple punching bags, dollies, weightlifting etc.). Overall, its a perfect gym MMA gym!”
